This article include a list of biennials and art events world -wide and its correspondents websites

the word biennial is originated from the Italian word “biennale” which describes an event that happens every two years. The first international art biennial was the Venice Biennale in 1895. From 1890s to 1980s, only 17 biennials were in existence. Today, there are over 60 contemporary art events around the world

The 1990s saw the first proliferation of biennials, principally outside of the traditional Western centers in Asia, Central and South Americas, Oceania and Africa. This phenomenon is known as “biennialisation” and is followed by an increase of Art fairs world-wide. The increase in biennials and art fairs were consequences of the changes that occurred in the art market after the mass expansion of the internet and communications systems as well as globalization.

Today the word biennial makes reference to a large-scale periodic exhibition to showcase international contemporary art production, at the same time acting as an instrument of the economic strategy of the world-wide creative industry, and a vehicle to establish the development and cultural positioning of a city. The art fairs showcase galleries from all over the world, introduce new and establish artists providing dealers, collectors and visitors with an opportunity to see and buy art.
